Orifice Design

This type of steam trap has no mechanisms to modulate and control the capacity of the trap. The trap has only a small fixed orifice which is sized by the manufacturer.

Thermodynamic

Thermodynamic traps work on the difference on dynamic response to velocity change in flow of compressible and incompressible fluids. It controls the discharge with a one moving part, a metal circular disc. This design is essentially a "time cycle" device and does not respond to load variations. Every time this design cycles 0.032 lbs. of steam is lost.

Impulse

Impulse traps work on the difference on dynamic response to velocity change in flow of compressible and incompressible fluids. It controls the discharge with a one moving part, a metal circular piston, with a sensing orifice tapped down the middle. This sensing orifice causes great losses of live steam (5% of published capacity) when loads are low or in superheat conditions.
