JUSTIFICATION FOR VELAN STEAM TRAPS
The Velan Steam Trap design offers a
number of benefits for the high pressure/high temperature user. They
include the following:
- NO WATER PRIME REQUIRED. One of the disadvantages
of the inverted bucket design is that it requires a water prime in order
to close the trap. When subjected to superheat, this water prime may
boil off and fail the trap open, resulting in significant loss of live steam. The
operation of the Velan thermostatic/bimetallic steam trap modulates condensate
at a temperature slightly below that of saturated steam. As condensate
forms in the drip leg and lowers the temperature of the bimetallic stack,
the closing force of the trap is diminished and the line pressure begins
to gradually open the valve, producing a low velocity flow which evacuates
the line of condensate. When the condensate temperature rises in the
drip leg due to this flow, the closing force of the bimetallic stack increases
and closes the valve of the trap, shutting off flow. When superheated
steam is present in the drip leg and evaporates any condensate present, the
closing force of the bimetallic stack increases, closing the trap tighter,
and insuring no leakage of live steam.
- RAPID AIR VENTING AT STARTUP. The inverted bucket
design has a poor air venting capacity. The Velan design has a wide
open main valve when subjected to ambient temperatures. At startup,
the Velan trap vents all incondensable gases and cold condensate before modulating
closed. This results in a more rapid startup with fewer plant personnel
required to supervise venting of main lines during warmup.
- NO LIVE STEAM LOSS. The Velan design employs a
positive trapping concept, only opening when condensate is present. This
ensures that no live steam will be lost during operation. Inverted
bucket traps lose live steam as a function of the diameter of the air vent
hole drilled into the top of the bucket.
- STELLITE TRIM STANDARD. All Velan steam traps are
fitted with Stellite seat facings to resist wear by high pressure flow, dirt
and scale. Velan remains the only steam trap manufacturer to provide
Stellite facings in their steam traps. Stellite is required on all
control valves and shutoff valves for steam service.
- INTEGRAL STRAINER. All Velan steam traps are fitted
with integral stainless steel screens to protect the trap operating mechanism
from damage by dirt and scale.
- INTEGRAL CHECK VALVE. The discharge valve in the
trap acts as a check valve providing full back flow control.
