Main Steam Drains
In a fossil-fired power plant, high-pressure steam drains are usedto remove condensate from the main steam line. This steam mainis the highest pressured/highest temperature line in the plant. Themain steam line runs from the superheater at the top of the boilerto the inlet side of the high-pressure turbine. Main steam drainsare situated on this line to remove start-up loads, hot runningloads, and cool-down loads.

The “N” Series
Velan “N” series steam traps efficiently discharge air, gases, andhot condensate during start-up. Once the steam main is up topressure and temperature the steam trap will shut off tight in thepresence of superheat or modulate condensate 15-20°F belowsaturated temperature.

Advantage
The drop in temperature of the accumulating water causes aslight drop in pressure. Water particles flowing with steam caneasily find their way into the drip pocket. Because the trap isunder water most of the time, leakage of steam is impossible. Thetrap remains tight in the presence of superheat.
