Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best steam trap design for tracing applications?

The Velan multi-segmented design is the most efficient and longest lasting for tracing applications on the market today.  Because of the fact that it constantly modulates condensate out of the system, it gives a customer the following benefits:

  1. No live steam loss equals more profit for the customer.
  2. Constant modulation versus blast-on / blast-off equals longer service life.
  3. Discharging condensate 20°F below saturation temperature will lower the back pressure in the return system because of flash steam.

Thermodynamic designed steam traps discharge condensate in a blast-on / blast-off operation.  This design also discharges condensate at steam temperature.  Because of this, customers that use this design have to do the following:

  1. Generate more steam than needed because of constant cycling.
  2. Replace steam traps more frequently because of constant cycling.
  3. Deal with elevated back pressure in the return system because of flash steam.

Inverted bucket designed steam traps discharge condensate in a blast-on / blast-off operation.  This design also discharges condensate at steam temperature.  Because of this, customers that use this design may have to do the following:

  1. Generate more steam to compensate for losses through the air vent hole.
  2. Replace steam traps more frequently because of constant cycling.
  3. Deal with elevated back pressure in the return system because of flash steam.
