8. Soot Blower Drains
In this coal fired power plant, soot blower drains are used to remove condensate
from the soot blower steam system. This steam main is a high pressure
/ high temperature line in the plant. The steam soot blowing system
is installed on each side of the boiler. The steam traps are installed
at either intermediate stages on the side of the boiler, or at the
bottom of the boiler. Soot blower drains are situated on this line
to remove start-up loads, hot running loads, and cool-down loads.
On soot blower drain applications, the best steam trap design in the marketplace
is the Velan Multi-Segmented Bimetallic Steam Trap. The soot blower drain
application will have a “large” start-up curve, followed by a “moderate” hot
running load. The only other load that will be encountered will be a “large” cool-down
load when the line is de-energized.
Due to the fact that soot blower drains can be very high in pressure and
temperature, customers weld these applications. Velan offers steam traps and “Piping
Kings” in for soot blower drains in A105 Carbon Steel.
Velan will offer the “N” Series or “SPF” Series
steam traps for soot blower drain applications.
