7. Air Preheaters
In this fossil fired power plant, drains are used to remove condensate from the
air preheaters. This steam main is a high pressure / high temperature line
in the plant. Air preheaters use steam to heat the outside air via steam coils
before entering the boiler. Air preheater drains are situated on these units
to remove start-up loads, hot running loads, and cool-down loads.
On air preheater applications, the best steam trap design in the marketplace
is the Velan Piston and Multi-Segmented Bimetallic Steam Trap. The air preheater
application will have a “high” start-up curve, followed by a “large” load
of condensate during operation. The only other load that will be encountered
will be a “high” cool-down load when the line is de-energized.
Due to the fact that air preheaters can be high in pressure and temperature,
customers tend to weld these applications. Velan offers steam traps and “Piping
Kings” in for air preheaters in A105 Carbon Steel.
Velan will offer the “SP” Series or “SPF” Series
steam traps for air preheater applications.
